I love Chinese food, but I want to find some healthy dishes when I go out, are there any good healthy choices?
Mr Class asked:
I love all Chinese food. Something healthy would be nice.
Keep in mind, I don’t have a real nice place near me. It is one of those walk in places. You know, they all have the same pictures on the wall.

Well get brown rice instead of white, ask for the sauce on the side. When I order, for example, I will ask for steamed chicken and brocolli with brown rice with the sauce on the side…it is sooo much healthier for you than to get it driping with the greasy sauce on it. Try it..it is sooo good.
I love chinese food, too. Chicken with brown rice is good. Tell the restaurant to put the sauces on the side so you can limit the sauce intake. No fried foods. Limit your sweets. Good Luck!
There is one that uses a lot of Tomatos - but I do not remember the name. A Tomato Dish and Rice would go well together.
If you go to an authentic place, aka one with lots of Chinese speaking people there you’ll be able to get some of the more genuine items. Get rice that isn’t fried and some Chinese greens on the side. Those are real good. Also get a steamed or marinated meat. Steamed ginger chicken is tasty and very low in fat since it isn’t fried.
How about cooking something yummy and healthy at your place? You might enjoy it a lot…
There are a couple healthy dishes. Try the Way Tu Yung or the Sweet & Sour Spaniel.
healthy is condition of ‘your’ mind
the restaurant would not be in business otherwise..
and what do pictures on the wall have to do with the quality of the food???
More than likely they are good wishes..Or religious in nature.
Some chinese places have the “spa diet” or “diet menu” part of the menu where they list some healthy options. If non present, I would suggest you keep your options to steamed dishes or, if you want fried, stick with stir fried vegetables and seafood and stray away from chicken and pork as they tend to deep fry those meets sometimes.
My favortie vegetable dishes are:
Eggplant w/Garlic Sauce
Sauteed Bok Choy (green vegetable)
Sauteed Spinach in Garlic Sauce
Another idea is to switch to brown rice but this does not cut down on fat, just carbs. It would also depend on how much rice you eat with chinese food, I usually do not eat much so for me it does not matter.
Don’t put too much soy sauce on your food as they almost always have added soy sauce already on the main courses and it is super duper high in sodium (again, if thats the type of healthy you are going for then it would apply, I personally do not care about sodium, only fat and deep fried dishes).
Get some tofu dishes or get some chicken and broccoli or beef and broccoli. Pork dishes proably have the most fat and chicken dishes that are deep fried and then stir fried in a sugar sauce are even worse (ie. Sesame chicken).
Hope this helps. If all else fails….who cares? Chinese food is too good to pass up, at least you get more nutrients than eating at McDonalds or some other fast food dump.
healthy choices - dishes that are steamed, grilled or lightly stirred fried. Traditional chinese soups is the best.
Without knowing what particular dishes your chinese place serves its a bit tricky…
Stay away from anything with fried or battered. So fried rice and honey chicken are out (my favourites). Try and choose something with lots of vegies in it and as far a sauces go something that is not really sweet and syrupy…cooked in a stock or oyster sauce rather than a sweet and sour sauce.
